Rakket will be free to college dorms and classes, even though some members of the class or dorm may never use the application. ■ The application will be easy to use and simple for you. ■ The application will automatically set your privacy setting to public. Thus, any Rakket user can view your profile and chat with you. ■ However, you can always go back to the default settings that Rakket provides and decide whether to share your profile or not with others. ■ The application will work with anyone who uses Facebook or Facebook Mobile. But if you are a Facebook user who uses Facebook exclusively on the desktop and not on the mobile app, you won't be able to chat with Rakket users until you upgrade to Facebook Mobile. ■ To activate Rakket, you will need to set up a Facebook account and provide it with your Facebook name, e-mail address, and computer or mobile phone's Facebook ID in order to connect Rakket to Facebook. ■ We will also ask you to set up a Rakket profile for our app. For any questions and feedback on the Rakket application, contact us: ■ At , ■ At , ■ Through Facebook. Over the last several months, I've had the pleasure of serving on the editorial board of *Higher Education Solutions.* In that capacity, I get to publish two or three articles a month in the magazine and write the cover story as well. As you can imagine, that's enough to keep me busy - and it hasn't always been easy, as the old adage about writing for magazines being a treadmill, at least in part, comes to mind. But one thing that is constant throughout my time on the editorial board is the excitement that people have in their submissions. I've had the privilege of reading a number of great submissions that incorporate multiple platforms of social media, and we hope you'll be as excited by them as I am. To kick off our summer series of articles, we thought it would be fun to talk with the people behind these great submissions. How did they find the organization? What were the challenges? I hope you'll be as excited by their submissions as we are. The perspectives of the editors are: Larry Downes, Director of EdCamp Europe at Cambridge University Press. Rakket is a next-generation location-based social networking tool for Facebook. Whether in a dorm, in a classroom, at a coffee shop, or at the airport, you can meet other Rakket users nearby, find people with similar interests, form study groups, listen to others' music, and share your favorite photos. It's a new world of spontaneous local networking and you don't want to miss all the action. Using Rakket What does "Near Me" mean? There are three categories of people you can interact with: ■ "Friends Near Me" are people on your local network who are also your Facebook friends. Typically, students in a dorm, in a classroom, or in the student center are all on the same local network. ■ "Others Near Me" are people on your local network who are not yet your Facebook friends. You can easily add them as a friend through Rakket. This is a great way for you to connect with people you meet in a dorm or in a class. ■ "Friends" are your Facebook friends who are not on your local network. You can chat with these friends no matter where they are! Aside from chat, you can also stream music and share files with people near you. There is also our Quick Break feature that lets you organize a study break with any of your friends or even everyone around you! Try it and see what you think. Why do I have to login to Facebook? Is the log in process secure? After clicking on the login link, Rakket takes you to a Facebook page where you enter in your Facebook username and password. You are then authenticated through Facebook. This is the most secure way of authenticating. We DO NOT ever have access to your account and password information as mandated by the Facebook software agreement. How do I chat with my friends? Double click on a person's name to open up a chat window and type a message in the lower portion of the chat window. Alternatively, you can click on "Say Hi" beside each person's profile to open up a chat window. While you are at it, try Quick Break and sending a file to a friend near you. How do I send a broadcast message to people near me? The Chat tab has a default chat window "People Near Me". Any message typed here will be broadcasted to everyone near you. Use this feature to broadcast an announcement to people in your dorm or your classmates, or System Requirements: This program requires Direct3D (DX) 9, and Windows XP or later.
